Black Colleges
Going to college is a major step in our lives. We all want to be certain before we start requesting that financial aid and taking out those student loans. Not to mention we want to have a decent University in mind. But this can be tricky. What makes a good University? Well, that comes down to reputation and what you wish to major in. It's ideal to find a school that excels in the field you wish to study. Maybe it's law or possibly business. Regardless, cost can often be an issue. How will you pay to go to college, and will you be forced to work full-time also? If you're African American, then maybe you want to consider a well-known black college. They may have a scholarship waiting for you.
It's kind of funny, but when I was in my senior year of high school, an advisor told me something peculiar about college. He asked me if I was interested in attending a black college in a nearby city. This of course made me wince. I simply thought I was odd because I'm white. What could possibly be the advantage of me attending a black college? Well, then he laid it on me. He said I could get a minority scholarship and it would pay nearly all of my tuition. WOW! That is pretty tempting. However, I ended up attending a different University that offered a program I needed. You always have to go with the one that offers what you need. The downside is that I now owe some money to lenders, but the up-side is that I acquired the degree I was after, and I had a great time going to school there. That's what college is all about.
You won't have trouble finding a primarily black college in this day and age. It's nothing like it was 50 years ago. There are schools that appeal to virtually anyone and everyone. Now, your main focus should be the school's reputation and whether or not they offer the major you're looking for. Once this is settled, strive for a scholarship or some sort of grant. This is money to pay for your education and you won't have to pay it back. Maybe you can find this sort of aid at a black college, and maybe you can find it elsewhere. Just be sure you focus on those grades. Some employers will want to know your graduating GPA.
